The Importance of Sleep
Getting proper sleep is as important as getting proper nutrition. Sleep helps us rest, heal, and be revitalized. Good sleep helps us with the things we generally relate to sleep, like having more energy and being more alert. However, getting a good night of sleep also help us with things such as strengthening our heart, regulating our sugar, helping our digestion, and regulating our weight. Sleep effects our mood, energy, and thought processes. If we sleep well, we are better able to function. If we don’t sleep well, these things are more difficult. There are many things about sleep we don’t even know about sleep, but we do know that good sleep reaps good benefits for our mind and our body. Good sleep can do so much for us.
Obstacles to Good Sleep
There are many obstacle to good sleep. It could be as simple as having too much caffeine too close to bed or having a room that is the wrong temperature. Our mattress or pillow can be uncomfortable and prevent us from getting good sleep. Or, it could be complicated as poor stress management, anxiety, hormonal imbalance, or lack of much needed nutrients. The list of possibilities can sometimes feel endless, especially if we try many things without success to get the sleep we need. If the cause of sleeplessness doesn’t seem to be physical or emotional, we may look for spiritual reasons. We may consider prayers for peaceful sleep.
Sleep and Spiritual Warfare
We can try all of the things that we are told will help us to sleep better and still have trouble sleeping. It can get rather overwhelming to have chronic sleep issues or any sleep issues! After a while, we can think of our sleep issues as spiritual warfare. You might wonder what spiritual warfare has to do with sleep. However, the devil will use any means possible to get you off the right path. Lack of sleep can be one of those means, if we let it.
We know that we can’t function our best when we are tired and are lacking sleep. The devil knows that too. The devil knows that if we are tired, we are likely to get lazy or try to cut corners. We are also likely to not have the energy to do the things God calls us to do in our life. So, lack of sleep is a great way to try to tempt us into sinning.
And, if we have any doubt who is going to win this spiritual warfare, we can remember verses like:
*2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV) –
”And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly there for will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
*James 4:7 (KJV) –
“Submit yourselves therefor to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
*John 16:33 (KJV) –
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
The Power of Prayer
As Christians, we know that prayer is powerful. There are many verses in God’s Word that talks about the power of prayer. One of my favorites is Luke 11:9 (KJV) where Jesus tells us, “And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
Having had frustrating sleep issues and now considering it spiritual warfare, it sort of reminds me of the story in Mark 9:17-29 where the apostles were not able to heal the boy and Jesus told them that the reason being was that “…This kind can come forth from nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29 KJV) So, to me, if a good sleep routine, eating all the proper nutrients, and all the other “sleep better advice” doesn’t work, it may require some “heavy duty spiritual measures” to get back on track. And, those “heavy duty spiritual measures” include prayers for peaceful sleep.
Prayer should be our first solution for sleep issues. However, if we haven’t thought of it yet or thought that it wasn’t the type of issue that we should “bother God with”, now is a good time to start praying for better sleep. And, we should remember that God wants us to pray constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and that he wants what is best for us (Jeremiah 29:11).
Prayers for Peaceful Sleep
We may choose to pray from the our heart or use God’s Word as inspiration when we pray. Here are some sample prayers of how this might look:
Prayers for Peaceful Sleep from our Heart
Heavenly Father, I humbly come to you with prayers for peaceful sleep. I know that I can come to you when I am in need and you will heal me. I can’t seem to get the sleep I need, but I know you can give me the sleep I need. I know that you can give me the peaceful sleep that I need. I ask you to please, hear my prayers. I ask you this through your Son, Jesus. Amen.
Heavenly Father, thank you for this day. You know that I have been having sleep issues and the problems it could cause. I know you want the best for me, please help me to sleep well. Protect me from anything that may get in the way from me getting any sleep. Help me to not only sleep, but to sleep peacefully in your loving arms and get the sleep and rest I need. I ask you this through your Son, Jesus. Amen.
Heavenly Father, I know you love me and I am so thankful. I am hurting and my life feels like it is spinning out of control, because I can’t get the sleep I need. It is like a fight every night. I have tried other things that are supposed to help me sleep, but you are my only cure. I should have come to you first and I am sorry. Please, help me get the sleep I need. Help me to be able to lay down and fall asleep peacefully without tossing and turning and without having anxiety. Help me to shut down my mind and give everything to you. Help me to sleep peacefully and protect me from anything that may interrupt healthy sleep. I ask you this through you Son, Jesus. Amen.
Prayers for Peaceful Sleep Inspired by God’s Word
*Inspired by Proverbs 3:24 (KJV) –
“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”
Heavenly Father, when I lie down and try to sleep, my find is overwhelmed and troubled. I have anxiety and thoughts of fear in the night. Yet, in your holy Word, You tell me to ‘not be afraid’. You tell me that my ‘sleep shall be sweet’. I want to do that, but it is difficult. Please, quiet my mind and give me a peaceful night of sleep. Help me in my fear to trust in you and to give my troubles to you. Protect me and help me so that indeed my ‘sleep shall be sweet’. I ask you this through your Son, Jesus. Amen.
*Inspired by Psalms 4:8 (KJV) –
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
Heavenly Father, I have a difficult time getting to sleep. The stresses and troubles of the world seem to hit me all at once, just as I put my head on the pillow to try to sleep. Please, divert my mind from these stresses and troubles onto You. Remind me that you are with me and that you will protect me. Help me to know your love and feel your presence. Help me to know that with you there, “I will both lay me down in peace and sleep, for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” I ask you this through your Son, Jesus. Amen.
*Inspired by Luke 1:37 (KJV) –
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.”
Heavenly Father, I thank you for your infinite love and for being able to come to you in times of trouble as well as times of praise. My inability to get peaceful and restful sleep seems like and impossible problem to overcome. For me, they are impossible, but for you Father, “nothing shall be impossible”. I know that and believe it. I come to you now to humbly ask for your help and for you to take this sleeplessness away from me. Help me to sleep peacefully and get the rest I need. Help me to be able to have the sleep and energy I need to better serve you. I ask you this through your Son, Jesus. Amen.
*Inspired by Job 33:4 (KJV) –
“The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.”
Heavenly Father, you created me. You breathed life into me. Now, you know that I am struggling to breath at night and that is leading to sleep issues. Please, give me your breath again. Continue to breath life and hope into me. Please, have mercy on me and hear my prayers for peaceful sleep. I pray and I pray. I know you love me and I know you will answer in your timing. Help me to embrace your love and endure until your perfect timing comes. I ask you this through your Son, Jesus. Amen.
Meditation and Prayers for Peaceful Sleep
Another thing to consider is prayer and meditation for sleep. Prayers for peaceful sleep can be included in a guided meditation. This mindful way to meditate and pray is a good way to help refocus our mind on God and away from whatever is preventing sleep. Some meditations will comfort us through God’s own words and remind us of God’s power and love for us. This might be a great way to relax and let God guide us into a restful and peaceful sleep.
